France

France remains unquestionably the leader of the pack, in spite of the advances made by New World producers in recent years. Terroir and generations of winemaking expertise combine to create the classic wines by which most others are judged. In France, perception is key and the stringent appellation laws have not stifled experimentation and innovation; nonetheless, it is still its classic grapes and regions that cement its position. Our Premium range reflects this, with excellent wines from Bordeaux, the Languedoc and the Rhône.

Laurent Miquel

Laurent Miquel has become one of the leading lights on the southern French winemaking scene, and deservedly so. He has long been producing single varietal Syrah and Viognier wines, which rival his famous neighbours’ in the Northern Rhône, and for a fraction of the price. The winery has been in Laurent’s family for nine generations and is situated at the southern tip of the Saint Chinian appellation. At Laurent Miquel, the tanks are fitted with integrated cooling circuits allowing them to control the low temperatures fermentations for white and rosé wines and to monitor the pre-fermentation macerations and fermentation temperatures of the reds (which ensures the best aromatic expression). Borne out of concern for environmental protection and rationalisation of their energy expenses, Laurent decided two years ago to equip all the new outside vats with the latest insulating technology. Laurent Miquel is now the first winery in France to have imported this Australian system. Once fully in place at the end of October 2009, this innovation will help reduce their carbon footprint enormously (up to 96.5 % of energy consumption reduction). With respect for the environment always at the heart of their objectives, Laurent Miquel continues to strive to minimise the impact of their vine growing and winemaking activities on the natural environment. Their policy of sustainable viticulture is now extended to their system of water collection and treatment and they have built a new, 100% natural plant that uses evaporation to treat their used water from the cellar. “Outside Condrieu, my favourite Viognier producer is Laurent Miquel from the Languedoc, whose Vin de Pays Viogniers are outstanding wines that could rival any but the very best of the Northern Rhône” Tim Atkin MW, Country House, July 2008
