Vina Ventisquero Receives First ClimateCare Certificate!
Vina Ventisquero has received its first certificate from the global climate change organisation ClimateCare - having offset 27 tonnes of carbon dioxide last year, through a variety of greenhouse gas reduction projects. In supporting these activities, including rainforest restoration and creating renewable energy sources, the winery has effectively offset the carbon emissions from 21,560 cases of wine that were shipped to the UK last year.
Viña Ventisquero was the first winery in Chile to offset the CO2 emissions of its wine transportation. In 2007, ClimateCare calculated the direct fossil fuel emissions of Ventisquero’s main business activities to quantify the amount of emissions produced by the company. Export Manager Américo Hernández explains, “The audit on our business activities and emissions related to wine production showed that transportation to the UK released the most CO2 - almost two tons per 40ft container - so this was the first area we targeted.”
In just nine years, Viña Ventisquero has cultivated prime vineyard sites throughout Chile’s most recognised grape growing regions: the Maipo, Rapel, Casablanca and Apalta Valleys, together with Peralillo and Lolol in Colchagua. These holdings allow Viña Ventisquero to take full advantage of a wealth of different terroirs and have contributed to the company’s current position as the fourth largest Chilean wine supplier to the UK.
