History of PLB

The History of our Company

In 1982, back when the market was dominated by Old World wines, Jeffrey Fredericks saw an opportunity. He originally began by supplying the supermarkets with own-label Spanish fortified wines - and the company PLB was established. Since then we've built on our Chairman's remarkable success and expanded the PLB portfolio throughout the wine producing world, resulting in a fantastic diverse offering from some of the world's biggest and best producers. Top-drawer vintages and everyday treats, established names and stars of the future, if it's out there, we'll find it for you.

As the world of wine has changed, so has PLB - and we've continued to identify and act on opportunities wherever we can. We've moved from predominantly supplying own label wines to becoming agents for some of the top wine brands in the UK. In August 2009, PLB acquired another wine business called HwCg. The two businesses had complimentary supplier portfolios, which when brought together, formed an exceptionally strong range, enhancing the PLB portfolio with brands such as Blason de Bourgogne, Laurent Miquel, Plaimont, Montes and Kautz. More recently, we've welcomed further prestigious agencies on board, including McWilliam's and Brown Brothers.

Over the last few years we have been building a range of superb wines focused exclusively on our on-trade, independent and wholesale customers - stunning offerings from boutique wineries, established premium brands from iconic producers and everything in between.

Our business model has always been to over-deliver on service and add value for our customers. Since we started out in 1982, we've grown into an 80-strong team that comprises a talented team of buyers, highly efficient logistics and account management operations, marketing expertise and category insight that is second to none. With a wine and beer producer base that now covers Europe, the Americas, Australasia and South Africa, PLB can truly claim to be at the forefront of the UK drinks trade.

Not everything has changed here at PLB, though. We're still an independent family wine business, albeit now the largest in the UK, selling 9m 12 litre cases of wine and beer and turning over around £130 million a year. Above all, we are a team totally committed to providing the best possible service to our customers
