About our Spirits
Matusalem Rum
Founded in 1872 by a Spanish family who came to Cuba specifically to produce rum, using the classic European Solera system for ageing used in Cognacs, sherries and brandies.
The family fled when Castro came to power and after many years out of production, descendants of the original family took back ownership of the brand and began to produce Matusalem rums once more, now in the Dominican Republic, but using the old recipe and ageing processes from 1872.
Matusalem is made with highest quality ingredients, ageing the purest, cleanest distilled alcohol. The ageing system used, Solera, was adapted to rum production by Matusalem founders to create exceptionally smooth, unique blends from a combination of varying aged rums, whilst maintaining the consistency vital for such a successful rum. The Solera number indicates the average number of years of the rums used in the blend and today there are no more than six competitive rum brands around the world that use Solera ageing and blending.
